Community EducationThe Volunteer Lawyers Network believes that community legal education is key to helping our clients. We offer five different Community Education presentations:

If you are interested in a Community Education topic that is not listed on our web site, please contact Darielle at 612-752-6649 to see if a presentation on your topic could be arranged. 1) Landlord/Tenant Rights and Responsibilities This class gives basic information on Landlord/Tenant Rights and Responsibilities. The class includes a quiz, a discussion of common issues, discussion of common scams, and Q & A. Length: 1 hour Target Group: Renters or soon to be renters, primarily low income. The intent of the class is to prevent problems before they happen. Upcoming Presentations:
Contact Darielle at 612-752-6649 if you would like to schedule a presentation. 2) Financial Literacy, Credit, and Planning for Homeownership This class gives basic information about long range planning for financial stability and homeownership. Topics covered are checking and improving your credit score, using credit cards, planning for your homeownership goal and common scams and pitfalls to be aware of. Length: 1 hour Target Group: Low income renters working toward homeownership. This presentation can be combined with the Landlord/Tenant presentation Upcoming Presentations: Contact Darielle at 612-752-6649 if you would like to schedule a presentation. This program offers basic overviews of common legal issues, such as immigration, family, and criminal law. After an oral presentation covering the basics of the legal topic (with no requirements for qualification under FPG), qualified clients have the opportunity to meet with volunteer attorneys for advice and brief services. Length: 1 – 2 ½ hours Target Group: Low income Spanish speakers who have legal questions about the topic Upcoming presentations: All presentations will be located at CLUES, 720 East Lake St., Minneapolis
Contact Emily at 612-752-6674 to schedule. 4) Recognition of Parentage/Paternity Education Classes The ROP class gives basic information on paternity in Minnesota with a focus on the Recognition of Parentage forms and establishing paternity. This class will also talk about the impact of ROP and paternity on child support and custody. Length: ~ 1 - 1.5 hr Target Group: primarily unmarried fathers, but all are welcome. Contact Tom at 612-752-6675 to schedule. Summary: A jeopardy style game designed to introduce teenagers to family law. Categories include Pregnancy, Dissolution, Paternity, Child Support, and Rights of Family Members. Classes are presented by attorneys and staff from the Volunteer Lawyers Network. Legal fact sheets and legal resources for youth are made available to students after the presentation.
